4 x 4 Off Road to Extreme Off Road

4x4 Off Road, Extreme Duty, Long Travel

There are many opinions on this issue, how strong, how tough do you go. Driveline Service, Inc., builds to your needs. Length of your driveline, RPM and application is directly related to tubing diameter and wall thickness. You cannot change tubing thickness without changing or machining component parts, such as weld yokes and slip splines. Strength and durability are key issues and warrant some thought. If you over build the driveline and something breaks, what will cost you more? You know the cost of a broken transfer case/transmission; or perhaps damaging bearings and/or gears in the differential. Blowing out that universal joint is the better weak link in our books. Although we all agree that twisting the driveline on a three day weekend is a bad thing. Calling the tow truck is worse. Everyone carries spare universal joints, well, most of us.

Increasing the diameter of the tubing increase strength. Do you have the clearance to except a larger diameter? In some cases, increasing the tubing thickness is the only answer, especially in the front drivelines of some Jeeps. In those cases, 1-1/4 diameter is as big as it gets. You can move from .120-wall thickness to .188-thick. Increasing the universal size often times hurts rather than helps. 1310 series CV joints have approximately 30-degree movement before experiencing any binding. 1350 series only has approximately a 20-degree movement. Additionally, both CV heads have the same pin diameter in the center of the CV head, .500 (1/2 inch diameter). Did you gain, or did you spend money to look good? Most stick to the 1310 series and increase wall thickness or diameters or both.

If your suspension requirements more travel than standard drivelines, there are many options, as well as many price ranges. First things first, determining your driveline length and full crush, full extension and at normal ride. Leave the rest to us. Improperly made drivelines could result in damage to transmissions or transfer cases if you don't have enough crush space, or could even separate at full extension is too short. Either way, it'll ruin your day.
